The Story of My Cat Hermione
In 2003, I found a cat that I named Hermione and I would like to share her story. On October 25th, 2003, when I found Hermione in the grass, she was probably looking for something to eat. She was a little female, of about 4 or 5 months old. She was dirty, her fur was full of fleas, and her eyes were half closed because of infections. It was obvious that she had been abandoned. So, I took her home and I brought her at the veterinary clinic. During the following days, I quickly discovered a nice playful kitty, affectionate, sweet and already very endearing. When I was putting her outside, she never tried to escape. She was very close to me, feeling probably all the love and the security of her new home. At night, she would curl against me to fall asleep.
Three years later, she started to develop health problems and, in 2007 after some tests, the vet told me that she was diabetic and probably since her birth. From that day on, she had to receive insulin injections twice a day to help control the disease. Hermione was a very quiet cat, and so, I never had difficulties giving her the injections. Everything was going well until 2009 when she started having complications from that disease, including cataracts in both eyes. But, she still could see quite well. I often had to visit the vet because of her increasing health problems.
In December 2012, I noticed that she was losing weight rapidly in spite of being fed very well. In March 2013, she was very thin and she had become almost blind. In April 2013, despite the good care and all the love she received, there was nothing more to do. A few days before her death, she stopped eating, drank just a little bit, and stayed in bed all day long. She seemed quite ill. Animals cannot speak, but I could see the expression on her face. Hermione was 10 years old when she died peacefully on April 25th, as I was talking to her and gently patting her. I do not have any regrets saving her from a certain death in 2003 and offering her a good life, despite her illness. Last June, I wanted to pay tribute to my beautiful and brave Hermione by drawing her beautiful face in her memory.
I miss her a lot!
